HEALING THE MIND

Counseling

Therapy can be an effective means of identifying and treating commonly occurring mental illnesses and the disruptive nature of their symptoms-specifically to our emotional, physical, social, and spiritual well-being. When integrated with a functional medicine approach, counseling can help individuals identify and address the underlying emotional and psychological factors contributing to their health concerns. For example, a patient with chronic pain may benefit from counseling to manage the anxiety and depression associated with their condition, while also receiving treatment to address the physical causes of their pain. Native provides many counseling options as part of a whole-body, integrated approach to health including:

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

ACT is considered a third wave psychotherapy and it improves on certain aspects of CBT and adds mindfulness meditation. Where CBT is often about examining your thoughts and challenging thoughts that are automatic but not rational, ACT is more about noticing your thoughts and choosing not to engage, appreciating that thought is transient and neutral when allowed to simply pass.

The Gottman Method for Couples

The Gottman Method approach is based on the Sound House Theory, which identifies the essential foundations of any relationship. The Gottman Method aims to improve verbal communication, increase intimacy, increase respect, increase affection, remove barriers to conflict resolution and create more empathy and compassion within relationships.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on the cognitive model that our thoughts and perceptions influence the way we feel and behave.  The theory of CBT is that our thoughts and perceptions are often faulty or distorted and therefore the feelings and behaviors that we have in response to those thoughts are also unhelpful and oftentimes self-defeating.  CBT involves examining our relationship to our thoughts and identifying patterns of thinking that undermine our emotional well-being.

Autogenic Training

Autogenic training (AT) is a technique that teaches your body to respond to your verbal commands. These commands “tell” your body to relax and help control breathing, blood pressure, heartbeat, and body temperature. The goal of AT is to achieve deep relaxation and reduce stress.

HeartMath Biofeedback

Understanding the bidirectional relationship between mind and body and the impact of our thoughts and emotions on our physiology can empower us to manage symptoms of anxiety and depression more effectively. HeartMath biofeedback protocols leverage the tremendous influence the heart has over other systems of the body to help us restore balance and change perceptions. Biofeedback helps to illustrate this powerful relationship and restore a sense of control that sometimes feels lost in the face of anxiety, worry, panic, sadness, hopelessness and anger.

Freespira

Freespira is an innovative digital therapeutic proven to significantly reduce or eliminate panic attacks and PTSD symptoms by training users to normalize breathing pattern irregularities.

Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

Mindfulness based stress reduction involves mindfulness meditation training, yoga, and body awareness training. It also involves the exploration of patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. This type of therapy provides an opportunity to examine the patterns of your mind and subsequent feelings and actions with the goal to gently interrupt negative or disruptive patterns that contribute to stress, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive therapy (MBCT)

This type of therapy combines the principles of cognition, such as the relationship between the way you think and how you feel and meditation practices. This therapy involves a process intended to help the individual change their relationship to negative emotions and stressors rather than try to eliminate them. The mediative and meditation aspects of the therapy serve to rebalance neural networks, allowing the individual to move away from automatic negative response patterns that reinforce unhealthy mindsets.

Attachment Based Therapy

This style of talk therapy is based on attachment theory, which focuses primarily on the role of early interactions between a child and their adult caregivers. Attachment-based family therapy (ABFT) falls within this category, and is a type of family therapy that is used to treat kids and teens with behavioral and emotional problems that stem from childhood trauma associated with poor attachment styles.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

TF-CBT is an evidence-based therapy for children, adolescents, and caregivers to overcome trauma-related disruptions in emotional well-being. TF-CBT helps children address distorted or upsetting beliefs and attributions and learn skills to help them cope with ordinary life stressors.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS is an evidence-based psychotherapy, most commonly used for healing trauma. IFS helps clients to heal by accessing and healing their protective and wounded inner parts. IFS creates inner and outer connectedness by helping clients access their Self and, from that core, come to understand and heal their parts.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is the incorporation of art (drawing, painting, sculpting) into therapy for therapeutic benefits. Some of the benefits include stress reduction, relaxation, decreased worry, and insight. Art therapy is beneficial for children, teens, and adults. You do not need to be an artist to participate in art therapy and no experience is required.

In therapy, art can be used as another form of communication or self-expression. For example, creating a piece of art may help you express difficult feelings that you may not be able to find the words for. It can also help you discover aspects about yourself that you weren’t aware of or connected to. Art can also help make you feel more comfortable talking about uncomfortable things or feelings.

Child led play therapy

Child-led play therapy- child-led play therapy or nondirective play therapy is a counseling approach used to help children communicate their inner experiences through the use of toys and play.  In this approach, the therapist is trained to trust the child to direct their own process rather than imposing an agenda for therapy on the child based on the therapist’s interpretation of what they need. This is a nonpathologizing technique based on the belief that children have the innate drive to achieve wellness.
